Minutes of the Members Meeting held in Northwood WI Hall on Thursday 12th May 2016.
.
As President Fay Bunday was unwell, Anne Jonas, Secretary, presided over the meeting, thanking Morag Cook for taking the minutes.
.
Welcome – Anne Jonas welcomed a much depleted membership to the meeting; there were lots of apologies from members, some on holiday, some had other commitments due to the meeting being held a week later than usual because of the elections and some members not very well.
.
Evelyn Nevin – one of our previous members has sadly passed away and her funeral is being held at the Crematorium on 13th May at 3pm. Evelyn was on Committee and a very committed member of Northwood WI before having to go into a Nursing home. Several members will be attending her funeral.
.
Art & Craft – The last meeting went off very well with various crafts being done. More members would be very welcome. The next one is on 19th May at 2pm in the hall. The cost is only 50p to cover a cup of tea and biscuit (or if you are very lucky a piece of cake!).
Secretary’s Report, Treasurer’s Report and Hall report were read out.
.
Hall Report – Mary said that bookings were coming in for the next few months.
.
Ramble – The ramble/amble at Newtown was enjoyed by all who went and a lovely meal was enjoyed at the Horse and Groom, Ningwood, the walkers being joined there by other members who cannot do the walking. The next ramble will hopefully be on the 9th June.
.
Outing – The outing on the 11th May to Chichester and Chichester Canal was enjoyed by all who went, although it was a very early start. Unfortunately, Ade Thistlewood, June’s husband had a bad fall, ending up with stitches in his face and being kept in hospital overnight in Chichester. He also has some very bad bruising on his chest. The Canal trip with Scones, Cream, jam etc was excellent with plenty of extra cakes and tea.
.
Next Meeting – Is on 2nd June and our Speaker is Paul Fyfield on Seated Exercises. Competitions are – Tallest Weed and BGB. Paul did a sponsored night walk around the Island for 4 charities recently and he is very kindly giving Northwood WI £100 of this to spend how we wish. Paul holds a class at Northwood WI hall on Mondays 12 to 12.45pm.
.
Solent Group Meeting, Beetle Drive – Held on the 19th April was very well attended. Another one is being planned in October. The sum of £79 was taken on the raffle. Although not intended, a profit of £25 was made on the evening after all expenses were paid.
.
Birthday Lady – This month is Mary Chick, celebrating her birthday on the 20th May.
.
Competition Results – Victoria Sponge: 1st – Helen Davis, 2nd Elisabeth Hamilton, 3rd Judeth Baker and 4th Morag Cook. Best Garden Bloom was won by Elisabeth Hamilton.
.
We then had a break for tea with a lovely piece of one of the above sponges.
.
Kelly Edwards – From YMCA Young Carers, Isle of Wight, gave us a talk on what a young carer’s life involves and that there were over 350 young carers on the Island alone. They hold several activities a year for the young carers to give them a bit of a break. As The Young Carers (IOW) were our Charity for 2015, Kelly received a cheque on their behalf for £110 and a further £20 for her talk; this will also be donated to the young carers.
.
Resolutions – The two resolutions going forward to the Annual Meeting in Brighton this year are – Avoid Food Waste – the WI calls on all supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, thereby passing surplus food onto charities thus helping to address the issue of increasing food poverty in the UK. This resolution was passed unanimously. The second resolution was – Appropriate care in hospital for people with dementia – We call upon HM Government and the NHS to provide facilities to enable carers to stay with people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia that have been admitted into hospital. This resolution was passed 9 votes for and 1 against.
.
With no other business the meeting closed at 3.55pm.
