The ‘TRANSPORT THROUGH THE AGES’ exhibition staged by Cowes Heritage was hailed a great success, with nearly 2,000 people attending over its three weeks run, which ended on 9th November.
“Of the major exhibitions we have put on over the years this was the first one that has been away from the town centre, at Northwood House,” said chairman, John Groves. “Although this meant we did not attract so many casual passers-by, we were both relieved and delighted to receive the same strong support from more committed visitors. And from the remarks in the visitors’ book it is clear that our efforts to graphically illustrate the town’s rich and diverse transport history was greatly appreciated – with words such as ‘excellent’, ‘well done again’, and ‘wonderful’ often appearing on the pages.”
Some visitors even made special journeys from the mainland, including from Salisbury, Bournemouth and Dover – all apparently keen to revive memories of times when they lived in Cowes.
Besides the displays, visitors could also view a specially made 78-minute DVD, leading to many going on to buy a copy. Various Cowes Heritage publications, including one about the former Cowes Airport, also enjoyed useful sales.
John Groves was grateful to actor Geoff Hughes for officially opening the event, and the County Press for its extensive pre-publicity.
He also warmly thanked Cowes Town Council and Cowes Business Association for meeting the cost of the Northwood House hire, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation for giving a Grass Roots grant for the making of the DVD. In addition he appreciated the cooperation and assistance of the caretakers at the house, and Colin Winsor for putting up a banner in the High Street.
“And last, but not least, I must also compliment my fellow committee members and helpers for working so well together, sharing out responsibilities.”
One of the displays, about the momentous sailing of the Ark and Dove to Maryland in 1633, has now transferred to Cowes Library, in readiness for the marking of the 375th anniversary celebrations in the town on 22nd November.
