REPORT – JULY/AUGUST 2009
I.W. COUNCIL ELECTIONS
RESULT FOR THE ELECTORAL DIVISION OF
COWES SOUTH AND NORTHWOOD – JUNE 2009
THANK YOU!
As reported in Northwood News, I have been returned as your I.W. Councillor.
My majority of 757 was the highest of any candidate as was my percentage of the votes cast at 75.8%. Turnout for this new Electoral Division was 45.53% with just over 50% of Northwood’s voters turning out.
This all compares very favourably with the 2005 turnout which was also the day of the General Election.
I am extremely grateful to residents for their marvellous support which I can assure everyone is appreciated more than you could probably imagine!
I look upon this not just as a vote of confidence in me but also for my colleagues in the Parish Council, Community Partnership, the Northwood Gnomes and the many Northwood voluntary bodies whose members do so much to enhance our village life. It gives me great pleasure to thank them for all they have done and will continue to do to help make Northwood such a super place in which to live!
Although I am now also responsible for nearly 550 homes in Cowes South (approximately 1000 more electors), I can assure Northwood residents that I will continue to be as available as I have been these last 11 years to advise and deal with any issues or problems on which you may need my help as your local Councillor.
Residents will I am sure also wish to congratulate Paul Fuller on his successful election campaign in the neighbouring division of Cowes West and Gurnard. Paul and I whilst having different political views will be glad to cooperate on the new I.W. Council to the best advantage of local residents.
I now look forward to completing the school re-organisation process; the £36m complete re-building of Cowes High School, the £800m Private Finance Initiative to re-build Island roads and the continued support of our elderly residents amongst other important tasks over the next four years.
Jill and I send all residents our very best wishes and renewed thanks.
PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT ON THE BAE SYSTEMS SITE
This is a major development comprising an ALDI Supermarket with Office and Light Industrial Units on this important site off Three Gates Road.
I hope residents took advantage of the preliminary consultation days earlier this month where displays of the major features of the development were available to discuss with the developer’s planning and highway consultants.
The proposals were discussed at the June meeting of the Parish Council whose members including myself were unanimously in favour of the scheme (Cllr Brooker was absent) subject to expressed concerns about highway, traffic and pedestrian (including pupils of Somerton School) issues all of which will need to be satisfactorily addressed at length when the planning application is filed in about two months’ time.
There will then be further more detailed consultation and interested residents should read the County Press Planning Notices or check the Council’s website at www.iwight.com for full details. I will also of course be reporting on this in my monthly reports.
Copies of the consultation presentation were displayed at the June Parish meeting and I will also have these available at the 7th July meeting at 7.45pm in the W.I. Hall.
There are 15 minutes for residents to ask questions about this or any other subject at the beginning of the meeting.
