Over Christmas and New Year I spotted three new birds to add to our list. This brings the total up to 63.
All three were seen at Medham.
At low tide I saw a kingfisher feeding in a muddy channel. It flew off to the jetty, stayed in place for a couple of minutes, then flew upriver.
The other two are birds that are easy to see on the eastern bank of the Medina but I had not previously seen in our area: curlew and wigeon. Four wigeon were in the river. They got spooked by a fast boat, took off and landed in the estuary. They did not stay long before flying upriver. One day a curlew flew past without stopping; a couple of days later I saw two feeding at low tide, some distance apart.
These are three birds that I have wanted to see for some time, and am glad to be able to add to the list.
There were also large numbers of Brent geese around.
