COCKLETON LANE

It dips between the rising fields,
this lane, this seaward-wending lane;
where ev’ry gap a vista yields,
that takes me back in time again.

Dark wooded dells, and gentle arcs
of hills displayed in west’ring light;
and Solent’s lucent surface marks
the northern boundary of Wight.

Here cows, quiescent, form a frieze,
a bovine band with watchful eyes;
and there, bespired among the trees,
the parish church of Gurnard lies.

It takes me back full forty years,
when youth and vibrant health were mine;
and all the intervening tears
dispel where earth and sea combine

to lift the heart and ease the mind.
What wealth, what plenitude of peace!
Now, one with Nature, there I find
a consanguinity with trees.
