NORTHWOOD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP REPORT
(Colin Palmerton, Tel: 01983 282242; Email: overner@onwight.net)
Another New Year firmly established and the Partnership continues with its aim to maintain and improve our village for the benefit of all residents. This will undoubtedly become more difficult, within the current economic climate, as the Partnership receives no income other than submitting bids to various Grant Funds.
However, not all our efforts bring success. Despite the Island’s Rural Community Council agreeing the 1st stage of our bid for £9,600, to provide play equipment for the village’s very young children, it was eventually rejected. Nonetheless, we understand there will be other chances to submit bids from this ‘pot’.
The good news is that we have been successful in a bid to place seating in the two bus stops by the Horseshoe Inn and the two near the entrance to Uplands Road. Further to which the grant will pay for the placing of the new, wheelchair accessible, village signboard. This will be placed adjacent to the old signboard which has been vandalised and past its ‘use by’ date.
We are extremely grateful for this grant of £3,182 from the ‘Leader’ scheme, DEFRA, SEEDA and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
This grant covers 80% of the costs with the balance being from ever-reducing Partnership funds. All of its members agreed that community money should be used for community projects and not just to show a healthy cash balance. There have been other possible sources of Grant Aid which are being investigated. If readers have any suggestions for schemes that will benefit our community, please contact a Partnership member.
The next meeting of the Northwood Community Partnership is to be held at 7.45pm for 8.00pm, Tuesday 24th February at the Northwood W. I. Hall.
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE DATE, TIME AND VENUE ADVERTISED IN NORTHWOOD NEWS AS THE CHANGE WAS MADE AFTER THE PARISH MAGAZINE WENT TO PRINT.
FRIENDS OF NORTHWOOD CEMETERY UPDATE
Membership of this group has grown to around 170. Burial Records have been updated to 1955, and the website is receiving just short of 1000 hits per month. In the last few months The Friends have replaced seating, installed an information board and helped replace the door to the Dead House.
The Committee comprises two separate working parties – the first led by new Committee member, Richard Day. The purpose of the Nature Conservation group assists in cutting back some of the vegetation and undergrowth which is taking over parts of the cemetery. The working party meets every three weeks until the spring.
The other working party is focused on Fundraising, Projects & Restoration. A fundraising timetable was agreed for the coming year, and will coincide with Grant Applications for stabilising the Mortuary Building and The Chapel; restoring the toilet; and creating a Visitors Centre. The first event is a Quiz Night due to be held at the Kingston Arms on Friday 27th February.
