NORTHWOOD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP REPORT (Colin Palmerton)
Hopefully, most residents will have noticed that a brand new notice board has been sited on the grassed area adjacent to the Horseshoe Inn Public House, the previous board having exceeded its useful life and lately subject to some mindless vandalism.
Also, seats have been provided at four village bus shelters – on both sides of Newport Road, near to Northwood Stores and on both sides of Nodes Road close to the junction with Uplands Road. This Project was enabled through a financial partnership between the Community Partnership and The Rural Development Programme for England and funded by DEFRA and the EU. The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, Europe investing in rural areas.
The notice board has been specifically designed in three sections to benefit the Parish Council, the Community and the Community Partnership. Any community activity or information can be displayed in the centre section. The maximum space for each section is sufficient to hold nine A4 size sheets of paper. Planning consent does not permit us to allow commercial advertising.
Very many thanks to Derek Toms for his creative and invaluable work in creating this board, which will serve our village and its residents for many years to come.
The overall cost of this Project was almost £4,000 of which the Partnership provided 20% of the cost. Ultimately, this has reduced our funds to an extremely low level. With automatic grants no longer available from the Isle of Wight Council, it will become even more difficult to fund future projects bringing benefit to Northwood. Nonetheless, two future schemes have been devised. How and from where funds will become available is a matter of guesswork.
The first is a ‘Welcome Pack’ for new residents of our village. (This is where YOU come in). What information should be in the Pack? Local shops & businesses? Medical services? Community Groups? Link to the village website? Local Parish Councillors?
This is YOUR village. What would YOU want in such a Pack? Give us your ideas.
There is also an intriguing idea to create ‘FIT’ village trails around Northwood.
If you believe, as a village resident or not, you should help in any way with these (or other projects) the next Partnership meeting is on Tuesday 28th April 2009, starting at 7.45 pm in the Northwood W.I. Hall, Newport Road.
