Future Meetings of Northwood Parish Council

The next two month's meetings are currently scheduled for:

November 3rd Full Council
November 17th Planning Committee
December 1st Full Council
December 15th Planning Committee

Meetings are held in the Northwood W.I. Hall and start at 7.45pm. Public attendance is welcomed and prior to each meeting there is an opportunity to ask questions of members of the Parish Council. Confirmation that any meeting is proceeding as scheduled may be obtained from the Clerk – contact details above. Minutes and agendas are always displayed on the Community Notice Board.

Summary of Recent Parish Council Meeting(s)

The Parish Council last met on September 15th (Planning Committee) and October 6th (Full Council). Matters considered at these two meetings included:
• Two planning applications, to one of which objections were raised (September 15th).
• One planning application, to which no objections were raised (October 6th).
• Four planning consents (total across the two meetings above).
• The report from the Local Environment and Neighbourhood Officer.
• The new Island Insulation Scheme (see later).
• A grant application from Northwood Playgroup.
• Future maintenance of new planters.
• Representation at the IWC Highways PFI briefing in November.
• Reports from the Parish Council Working Parties and IWC Ward Member.

The Council will be considering two planning applications and two Listed Building Consent applications on October 20th.

VILLAGE DESIGN STATEMENT (Peter Brooker)

Despite two previous appeals, no interest or support whatsoever has been forthcoming for the preparation of a Village Design Statement for our community. The present Parish Council has therefore dropped this project. It would be up to the successor council in 2010 to decide if it was to be pursued again.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH REPORT (John Pullen)

On the 13th October, between 6pm and 9pm, a car in Wyatts Lane was broken into and a Satellite Navigation device was stolen. The car window was smashed to gain access. There are normally people walking about at this time and anyone with any information should contact the police.

Some other items of note:

• Criminal damage occurred on the 2nd October when a car roof was dented in Nodes Road.
• A male was assaulted as he alighted from a bus near Northwood Garage. The police are keen to hear from anyone with any information.
• The problem of motor cycles using the footpath from Medham Lane to the riverside cycle way was discussed at a site meeting this month. PCSO Steve Oatley told the residents that the police were monitoring the situation and would continue to visit the area. It would be difficult to restrict the access for small motor cycles without causing inconvenience to the public.

Scam Warning From a Reliable Source

This scam is related as follows:

"A new telephone 'scam' has arrived. I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00. A threat was made that if I did not pay I would be cut off. The 'cutting off' of the line is very simple: the 'representative' stays on the line with his mute button on and you can't dial out – but he can hear you trying (this is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable."

Obviously, once anyone unscrupulous has your credit/debit card details, there is nothing to stop them cleaning out your account.

NEW ISLAND INSULATION SCHEME

A new Island Insulation Scheme offers free (for priority groups) or discounted home insulation to owner-occupiers and private tenants on the Isle of Wight.

Thousands of tonnes of carbon will be saved under this new scheme from the Isle of Wight Council with support from one of the UK's leading energy companies. The scheme is funded and delivered by E.ON and supported by the Isle of Wight Council. Installations are carried out by Mark Group.

The scheme aims to assist in reducing the Island's carbon footprint by installing subsidised cavity and loft insulation in thousands of homes, saving around 280,000 tonnes of carbon. Participants will also be able to see up to a £420 saving per year on the cost of heating their homes.

The scheme, which will go live in October, further supports the Eco-Island vision by creating jobs on the Island. A number of positions for local people will be created with the installation company Mark Group in the first year of the two-year scheme, with the possibility of more being created depending on how many homes sign up for the subsidised insulation.

The £420 saving over a one year period is made up from installing cavity wall insulation and increasing your loft insulation from 25mm to 270mm. The cost savings shown are approximate, are provided for illustrative purposes only and are based on a gas-heated, semi-detached house with three bedrooms. Savings assume a gas price of 3.407p/kWh with a gas consumption of 31,700 units per annum (prior to installing the insulation measures). Individual savings may vary depending on type, age, main heating fuel of your home or if you choose to take increased warmth following installation of the measures.
