The comments made in the following reports depict the views of the individual contributors, rather than the views of Northwood Parish Council.

NORTHWOOD PARISH COUNCIL ROUND-UP

The Parish Council welcomed and co-opted Councillors Brenda Clews-Cartwright & John Fuller.
The IW Council has confirmed notices will be put up, and enforcement action will be taken against residents allowing their dogs to foul, particularly on the Medham Cycletrack.
The police reported incidents of youngsters drinking in the grounds of Northwood School.
Work will begin on a Northwood Village Design Statement.
The Planning Department has refused revision of conditions to allow deliveries between 0700 to 2300 (rather than 0800 to 2200) at the proposed Aldi store in Newport Road.
A further letter would be sent to Highways regarding the settings of the Stag Lane Traffic Lights.
A reply was received from Cllr Pugh regarding the Parish Council’s concerns over ‘financial savings‘.
Playbuilder funding was confirmed for the village play area in Venner Avenue.

The next full meeting of the Parish Council will be held at 6.30pm, Tuesday 7th September, whilst the Planning meeting (subject to applications) is scheduled for 6.30pm, Tuesday 21st September. NORTHWOOD PARISH COUNCIL VACANCY

A vacancy has arisen on the Parish Council, following the resignation of Cllr Graham Cotterill.
If ten local government electors for the Parish of Northwood give notice in writing on or before the 27th August to the Returning Officer at County Hall that they wish an election to be held, then a by-election will be called. If said notice is not given the Parish Council can fill the vacancy by co-option.

BUS SERVICES (Paul Fuller)

From September, the Council will need to spread more thinly its grants for subsidising non-commercial bus services. This follows Southern Vectis advising of their intention to withdraw the frequency of services run commercially for years. This withdrawal will most adversely affect rural communities although it will impact upon existing services elsewhere.

In the Cowes Area it was intended to withdraw Wightbus Service 30 to and from Newport (via Rew Street and Pallance Road) and afternoon services operated on Service 32. The reasons for considering the withdrawal of these, were due to loading figures making it difficult to justify continuation. However, I requested that the service which returns from Cowes to Newport at lunchtime via Rew Street continues. This has been investigated, and I’ve received confirmation that this will now happen. To overcome re-registering, this service continues as Service 32.

I have also received confirmation that the Monday and Friday Dial-a-bus will continue for the time-being.

NOT JUST BRICKS AND MORTAR (Keith Clatworthy)

Like most old villages, Northwood has its fair share of listed properties, but what is a listed property? The definition of a listed building is a building that has been placed on the ‘Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest’. Any building on that list should be protected from significant change so that it may not be demolished, altered or extended without local planning permission.

In England the properties are split into 3 different categories, known as Grade I, II* & II. Category Grade I listed buildings are ones that are of international significance, an example on the Island is the Church of St Mildred in Whippingham, which was Queen Victoria’s church when she resided at Osborne House, which is itself Grade I listed. In Northwood we even have a Grade I listed building in the form of The Church of St John the Baptist, Chawton Lane, parts of which date back to the 12th century.

Grade II* buildings are classified as, “particularly important buildings of more than special interest” and Grade II are, “buildings that are "nationally important and of special interest”.

Examples of Grade II buildings in Northwood include Wyatts Cottage, 54 Wyatts Lane; Barleyfield Cottage, 36 Wyatts Lane; Pallance Farmhouse, Pallance Lane; Chawton Farmhouse, Chawton Lane; Hope Cottage, off Newport Road and Tarra House (The Old Rectory), off Newport Road.

There are, no doubt, more as you spread out into Cowes and Gurnard, as a suggestion for an evening’s entertainment, why not plan a stroll to include the most significant structures that our village has to offer.

ONE ISLAND ONE MP (Colin Cramp)

So the government wants over 30,000 of us to be part of a mainland parliamentary constituency because of the large electorate on the Isle of Wight. How has this suddenly become an issue? The answer is it hasn’t. The problem has evolved over the last 50 years. In 1960 the population of the IW was about 95,000 and the UK 52.5 million, and for the planned total of 600 MPs the IW was then close to the target 5% differential. One only has to look at all the new housing built on the IW over the last 50 years for a clue to the problem we now face.

Since 1960 the population of the IW has grown at a much faster rate than the UK as a whole. The present population is around 142,000 and the UK 62 million. So while the UK population has increased by 18%, the IW population, primarily due to net migration from the mainland, has jumped by nearly 50%. The relevant numbers are of course the electorate rather than the total population, but as the IW has larger proportion of persons age 18+ than the UK as a whole, the scenario for the IW is even worse.
