MEETINGS
Meetings of the Parish Council are held on the first Tuesday of the month, commencing at 6.30pm.
The meeting of the Planning Committee, if required, is held on the third Tuesday of the month, commencing at 6.30pm.

PARISH COUNCIL ROUND-UP

At the Parish Council meeting on Tuesday 4th January, three new councillors were co-opted.

These were: Cllr Roger Mazillius (I.W. ward councillor); Cllr Ray Mew; Cllr Chris Riddet.

Cllr Mew will also liaise with the Northwood Community Partnership, and represent the parish at the Isle of Wight Association of Local Councils. Cllrs Mazillius and Riddet will join Cllr Fuller on the Traffic and Transport Issues working party.
It was resolved that the precept, as previously advertised, be approved.

Cllr Pullen reminded the council that no official opening had yet taken place for the Venner Avenue Play area, and the advantages of waiting until the spring, when it might be combined with the installation of a new park bench, were discussed. This will be debated at the February meeting. Anyone wishing to become involved with, or contribute to, a new bench can contact Cllr Pullen; or any other member of the parish council.

LOCAL CRIME – Cllr John Pullen

PC Mark Thomas, the Safer Neighbourhood Officer, has reported that it has been a quiet period, crime-wise, but did make particular mention of the two reports of theft from motor vehicles in the village. One was in Pallance Road, the other in Oxford Street. Both vehicles were unlocked at the time of the thefts. PC Thomas urged that vehicles should be kept locked and valuables out of sight at all times.

WIGHT BUS – Cllr John Pullen

With the impending withdrawal of the Wight Bus service in September, Northwood, Gurnard and Cowes Councils are looking into the feasibility of a Community Bus. We would welcome any comments from people on this subject, if they could please contact any member of the Parish Councils with their views.

NO COLD CALLING – Cllr John Pullen

There have been some incidents of cold calling by energy companies. This despite a commitment by the biggest companies not to approach a property displaying a No Cold Calling sticker. British Gas are the latest culprits.
I have a small supply of No Cold Calling window stickers if anybody needs one.
Please let me know of any incidents of people cold calling, or ring Trading Standards on 01983 823370.

You do not need to identify yourselves and the calls are not recorded.

VILLAGE DESIGN STATEMENT / NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN –

The current coalition government has recently introduced the Localism Bill, with the intention of passing power ‘down the chain’ and giving more powers to local communities. This means the Parish Council should have more control over how we manage our own environment, in particular with regard to planning and the provision of new development along with some existing services.

Village design statements help to explain and describe the unique nature of a community, where it sees itself in the larger picture, and how it wishes to move forward.

A key part in all of this is the involvement of local people in the writing of the statement, giving them ownership of the plan, and helping them direct the future of the community. There are many aspects to consider, including attracting new business, employment, the provision of affordable housing, the retention of key buildings and amenities, and the provision of local services. Many of these will come under the jurisdiction of the Parish council in the future, as spending cuts bite and the government pushes forward the Big Society agenda.

It is important, therefore, that individuals, as part of the community as a whole, make their voices heard, put forward their views and ideas, and take an active part in the decision making process as it moves forward.

Over the next few months the parish council will be seeking your assistance in this important task, and will be asking your opinion on which direction we take. In the meantime, any ideas or comments can be directed to Cllr Patrick Bentley, who will be delighted to discuss it with you.
