The History of Cowes Churches is latest Cowes Heritage Exhibition

People and events connected with churches and chapels in Cowes, Northwood, Gurnard and Marks Corner, is the subject of the current exhibition being staged by Cowes Heritage.

The History of Cowes Churches, being held daily, 10am – 4pm, at Northwood House from 17th October to 8th November, is full of fascinating reminders of when for much of the population church or chapel attendance was a regular Sunday occurrence.

The exhibition includes photographs of people attending places of worship still in existence or which have been forced to close over the years because of dwindling congregations.

Sunday schools, youth groups, choirs, festivals, special family events such as weddings and baptisms – they are all depicted. As well as many old photographs, there will be treasured albums and personal reminiscences in either printed or audio form.

John Groves, Chairman of Cowes Heritage, said: “Our members have worked hard to ensure that The History of Cowes Churches will be of the same high standard that people have come to expect with our exhibitions.

“Hopefully the displays will rekindle the memories of many older people, as well as provide the younger generation with an insight into what Sunday meant for so many of their forefathers and mothers.”

Admission will be free, though donations would be gratefully received to help finance the on-going work of Cowes Heritage; this would include preparatory work for next year’s exhibition, about Northwood House and its role in two World Wars.
