SOS – COWES RNLI THROWS OUT ANOTHER ENERGETIC CHALLENGE

An SOS call with a difference involves Cowes RNLI, as they invite people to participate in a sponsored fun-day.

SOS is the RNLI’s biggest fund-raising initiative of the year, with branches up and down the country producing a whole variety of weird and wonderful events intended to appeal to all the family.

Last January Cowes RNLI SOS participants collectively managed to chalk up the equivalent of seven 'circumnavigations of the Isle of Wight'  at Gurnard Pines Holiday Village, raising in the process a useful sum for the national charity that saves lives at sea.

The next Cowes event, on Saturday 29th January, has, however, a special local cause: to contribute towards the £1million appeal for the proposed new lifeboat station at the former Customs House next to The Parade.

Rowing and cycling machines, an indoor swimming pool, and a nature walk are all being put at the disposal of sponsored volunteers. By the end of the day it will be known just how many times participants have together chalked up 60 miles – roughly the equivalent of a single rounding of the Island.

“We want the 2011 Gurnard Pines event to be even more of a success, both for fun and raising funds," said Cowes Lifeboat chairman David Hembury. “We are extremely grateful to the owners of Gurnard Pines for again setting aside so many of their excellent indoor facilities for our SOS event, and this time also offering a well-pathed nature walk around the extensive grounds."

As well as the outdoor walk, the idea is that people wanting to row, cycle or swim indoors would do 15 minute stints at a time between 10am and 4pm, before resting or taking up another activity. As well as adults it is hoped that youngsters will get involved, and invitations are going out to Island schools.

Non-participants are also warmly invited to drop in at any time during the day. The Lord Lieutenant of the Island, Major General Martin White has already agreed to attend.

Sponsored activists can either enter as individuals or as a member of a team. For more information, contact Jenny Clune, telephone 293292 or email jclune@jclune.entadsl.com
