What Northwood church means to me

I like St John’s because of its age, the lovely stained glass windows and the warm welcome of its parishioners.

There has been a church in this land for hundreds of years; the original being at the centre of the Roman buildings, now buried under the fields, before Northwood spread towards Cowes. It has been extended to its present size with the addition of the wings.

There are several footpaths leading to the church from the surrounding houses, one of which connects it to the Women’s Institute (W.I.) Hall.

The W.I. Hall was built in 1930 on land donated by Mabel White, and was opened by Mabel in 1931. The W.I. has long provided companionship and learning for women of the community and has spread worldwide. There is no religious discrimination in the organisation, although many members of the local institutes attend St John’s. The W.I. holds Summer Fayres, Table Top Sales and other events to raise money towards maintenance. The Hall is hired on a regular basis by many groups for both educational and social activities. It is interesting to note that during WWII, the local women used the Hall to make preserves for the war effort.
