People say that you know you’re getting older when suddenly all the policemen start to look young. I think it’s equally shocking when you see that the music from your idols of your childhood and youth are now being released on those CDs only available through mail-order. Where have all the years gone is the usual lament or, to use the words of Bob Dylan (one of my teenage pin-ups) “The order is rapidly fadin’ … For the times they are a-changin’ ”. And so they do and inevitably we have times in our lives when we wonder about what we have achieved or may have done otherwise.

One reviewer said of Dylan that he doesn’t have a great voice but he is a good singer; he relates to his audience. That’s encouraging because it says life isn’t just about technical competence; it means we can do a great deal without having to be perfect in everything. If we all worried about our musical ability we’d never sing lullabies to our children or hum a tune for the simple pleasure of it. If we’re always striving for mechanical perfection then we might never make the best of the combined gifts and talents we do have, we might never offer them in service to those around us, we might not risk rejection but equally take the risk that opens up the door to new experiences, new life, perhaps even the new or renewed love of God.

That love is with us for all of our lives; God who created us loves us unconditionally, however we are, whether, in the world’s terms, we succeed or fail. To paraphrase another Dylan song, we’re given the love of God who takes us as we are and never lets us go.
