NORTHWOOD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP REPORT
(Report contributed this month by Colin Palmerton)
The Partnership AGM was held on Tuesday 28th April 2009 at the Northwood W.I. Hall.
It was a matter of some concern that, apart from Partnership members, no other villagers were present.
The Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Secretary were re-elected for the coming year.
Thanks were given unanimously to Anne Jonas who, regrettably, found it necessary to give up her post as Treasurer after years of excellent service to the Partnership. However, she said she would endeavour to remain as a member. Eileen Palmerton agreed to take on financial duties for the time being.
The police reported that last year had seen a 21% decrease of recorded crime in Northwood. This excellent result had been, in no small measure, thanks to the efforts of the Safer Neighbourhoods team. The police are to focus on building their relationships with schools and developing closer links with the community.
The Northwood In Bloom Project continues to elicit many positive comments which are gratefully received. A few more pairs of hands (aka Northwood Gnomes) for a few hours a year would make a tremendous difference with the ability to continue with this project.
The Chairman’s report made mention of the new bus shelter seating and the eventual placing of the new village notice board. The latter is well filled with current and relevant information. It is hoped that the information displayed is always kept up to date. Both these Projects were funded from Partnership bids.
Future plans include an entry to ‘Wight in Bloom, Best Community Project’. This event will be judged during July.
Having previously won the County round, the village had to miss entering in 2008. This year the village can and has entered the competition, which will be judged in July.
It is sad that, despite a request in last month’s Northwood News, no ideas or suggestions have yet been received by Alan Chick for the publication of a village Welcome Pack. Alan can be contacted on Tel: 01983 296020; E-mail: alanchick@tiscali.co.uk
The Village Trail Project is making ‘tracks’ under the expert guidance of Paul Fuller and John Pullen. Although John is not a voting member, his input has been and is most welcome. It is hoped that this Project can be completed in time for the 2010 Walking Festival.
Although a bid to the Aggregates Fund did not succeed despite receiving support from the Island’s Rural Community Council, the fund has reopened for 2009 and a further bid is being progressed.
As ever, it’s your village. It’s your choice. If you have ideas, suggestions or maybe even a small amount of time to give (rarely more than two hours, once a month!), any Partnership member would be delighted to hear from you.
If you are thinking of holding an outside event during the coming summer (?) months, the Partnership has a quite large gazebo for loan at a suggested donation of £10 per day. Contact John Pullen for details on Tel: 01983 281250; E-mail: pullenjd@hotmail.com
The next meeting of the Community Partnership will be on Tuesday 23rd June 2009 at the W.I. Hall Newport Rd commencing at 7.45 pm.
