NORTHWOOD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

FROM THE OCTOBER 2014 MEETING

.

POLICE NEWS
Crime Update for September. Three crimes had been reported during this month, the same as in September 2013.
The police priority remained the prevention of cycling and cars using the High Street in Cowes, during the times of prohibition. The Police had stopped four cyclists during the past month. They had all been issued with a verbal warning, together with an educational letter. Their details had been taken so if caught again, then formal action would be taken against them.
The relocation of the local police team. Although it had been hoped the move to the Cowes Enterprise College would take place at the end of October, that was now unlikely to be the case. The Parish Council would be duly informed once a date had been firmly agreed with all relevant parties.
.
FUTURE OF THE POST OFFICE
Councillors noted the response received from the Post Office Ltd to the letter sent by the clerk.
The clerk advised that Gurnard Parish Council had appointed Cllr M Bugden to the Working Party. A copy of the letter from the National Federation of Sub Postmasters addressed to the current postmistress of the Pallance Road Post Office, had also been circulated to councillors, for their information. It was confirmed that the landlord of the Travellers Joy had submitted an expression of interest in the Post Office counter being re-sited within the pub. However, he was awaiting a response to his application. It was suggested that if the move proved to be successful then an invitation be sent to the landlord, suggesting that he attend a future meeting of the Parish Council to outline his plans.
.
REFUGE COLLECTION DAY
Cowes Town Council had discussed the issues regarding “fly-tipping” in Cowes. The view had been taken that this was generated particularly by second home owners who came to the Island for the weekend, leaving their rubbish out on a Sunday evening, even though the collection day for Cowes was a Thursday. It had been suggested that an exchange with the Monday collection day for the majority of Northwood residents could help to resolve the problem. The Council rejected the proposal.
.
MATTERS RAISED BY THE CLERK
Football Pitch on Venner Avenue – Works had started. The contractors initially cultivated and re-soiled the area and had now levelled off and re-seeded the pitch.  The goal nets had also been replaced. The area was currently fenced off and the Parish Council should be advised when it was ready for use again.
The clerk requested progress on the proposal to re-furbish the memorial seat on the play park. Cllr Pullen confirmed that he was due to undertake this task along with Cllr Smith.
.

Community Highways Fund – Mr Tony Toynton, the IW Council’s Interim Highways PFI Contract Manager had advised that the IW Council had a number of suggestions for highway schemes to be undertaken in Northwood. He would gather these together and then advise further.
.

Tubs and Planters – The clerk requested progress on the planned creosoting of the tubs and planters. Cllr Pullen advised that he had a supply of green creosote and a tin of white paint suitable for painting the Northwood sign, situated along Nodes Road.  He would make contact with Cllr M Nicholson, so to carry out the works together at no cost to the Parish Council.
