Council provides alternative short-stay parking in Cowes during car park closure.

The Isle of Wight Council is making changes to parking restrictions in Cowes to assist traders and residents during the six-month closure of the Cross Street car park – the town's main shoppers' car park – which is due to commence in mid-September.

Southern Water is using statutory powers to carry out essential works to help reduce the risk of flooding from sewers in the town. Although the council recognises the importance of this work, it equally understands the impact the car park closure will have on local traders and residents and is taking steps to provide alternative short stay car parking spaces in the town during this period.

Changes to parking restriction in the town include:

* Brunswick Road will be changed from a long stay to a short stay car park to accommodate shoppers.

* Brunswick Road supplementary permits will be permitted unlimited stay within Brunswick Road car park.

* Standard Island Resident Permits will be limited to three hours within Brunswick Road car park.

* Brunswick Road Named Business Permits will be permitted unlimited stay.

* Brunswick Road General Business Permits will be limited to two hours within Brunswick Road car park.

* Cross Street supplementary permits will be honoured in any of the CS1 or CS2 bays.

* Tourist permit holders can continue to park in any other pay and display area for an unlimited period. Within Cowes the options are The Esplanade, The Parade, Brunswick Road, St Mary's Road (not Resident Only bays), Park Road and Mornington Road.

Residents are reminded that two hours free parking is available in 75% of the bays in the CS1 and CS2 residents' zone between the High Street and Victoria Road. Signage clearly shows which areas can be parked in.

Cllr Edward Giles, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for the environment and transport said: "We fully understand the concerns of Cowes traders, and are trying to make the best of a very difficult situation which is out of our control. By making changes to the Brunswick Road car parking restrictions, we hope to provide shoppers with alternative town centre parking for the duration of the Cross Street car park closure."
