Heritage Organisation Embraces the World Wide Web

Cowes Heritage has taken another bold step in its stated aim of recording and exhibiting the history of Cowes, by launching its own web site.

The site, www.cowesheritage.co.uk, gives people across the world the opportunity to share in the rich and colourful past of the famous Isle of Wight town.

Some of the pictures and information from eight exhibitions staged by Cowes Heritage since its formation in 2003 is featured, and the site also offers visitors the chance to upload their own memories and photographs of bygone Cowes and surrounding villages of Northwood and Gurnard. In addition they can purchase through the site the organisation’s books and DVDs, and view a short film clip from each of the four DVDs.

“While our exhibitions are much appreciated by thousands of people, we have always been aware of the fact there are many more people who would relish the chance to know more about the fascinating history of Cowes,” said Cowes Heritage chairman John Groves. “And there could be a fair number happy to add to our already considerable records with their own personal recollections and photographs.

“As well as the site giving graphic reminders of our past exhibitions, we have ensured people know that our next exhibition in October/November 2010 will be about Northwood House, the exact future uses of which are currently under consideration.”

He would particularly welcome comments and photographs that would add to Cowes Heritage’s knowledge of this prominent Listed property. The many aspects the organisation wants to cover include the story of the house, details of the Ward family who bequeathed both it and the surrounding park to Cowes back in the 1920s, and the valuable role the house played in two world wars.

John Groves paid tribute to Cowes-based web designer Wight365 for making such a professional job of the site, which will continue to be added to by Cowes Heritage.
