Cowes Inshore Lifeboat – Raffle Results

An active 69 year old man has beaten big odds to win a brand new Honda scooter – first prize in a raffle run by Cowes Inshore Lifeboat.

The draw, from a bucket holding over 3,500 stubs of £1 tickets sold over the past seven months, was performed on 8th December by the Mayor of Cowes, Councillor Geoff Banks. A ticket sold by a lifeboat crewman at the Southampton Boat Show to Ken Abson, of Denby Dale, Huddersfield, was the first to be drawn. When Councillor Banks immediately phoned him with the news he took some convincing before accepting it was ‘not a wind-up’.

He disclosed his family was no stranger to competition wins. He himself won a Golf car seven years ago, and only this week grandsons won two local lotteries. He would have no problem riding a scooter, as he already has a motorcycle, as well as a car and a boat.

Second prize, a 15 inch flat-screen television, was won by Glyn Watkins, of Newport, and third prize, a donated Alum Bay red glass vase, was won by Pam Green, of Farnham.

Cowes lifeboat chairman Chris Greenham said, “We are very grateful to Honda for donating the scooter for our vital funding-raising efforts. We also greatly appreciate all those who sold and purchased the tickets, and who helped with the publicity posters, including Lucy Cass who featured on our posters.”
