A group from the Cowes Radar Ex-Employees Association (CREEA) attended the Newtown range open day at Jersey Camp in Porchfield on the 14th May 2014. Fortunately it was a warm, dry day with lots of sunshine. Arrangements for the various walks were hastily changed for this year’s open day as the rain a few days earlier had made it impossible to navigate many of the waterlogged paths. The open day was well attended by various groups and individuals, many interested in conservation, the main theme of the open day. Visitors to the range were able to join any one of the groups dedicated to ornithology, botany and lepidoptery, all presented by volunteers interested in the subjects. Most of the CREEA members joined a general group that provided historical background to the range and activities involving conservation.

Resulting from a conversation with David Maidment, the present range warden, it appears that a visit could be arranged at some time other than the open day. The discussion did not include the availability of a host involved with conservation.

Afterwards we all enjoyed a cuppa in the ‘Recreation Mess’ while looking at a very interesting photographic display of local wild life. Many free-of-charge pamphlets were also available, for example, the history of the range and a magazine entitled Sanctuary, issued annually by the MoD, that address conservation and wildlife. These publications are available during the year.
