On Tuesday 2nd July 2013 sixteen members and two guests of the Cowes Radar Ex-Employees Association enjoyed a very interesting tour of the facilities available at the UK Sailing Academy in Arctic Road, Cowes.
.
Ash Holmes was our guide and he explained the function of many of the state-of-the-art facilities.
.
We were shown around Gypsy Moth IV and a larger, 14-man, ocean yacht both of which showed how ‘Chummy’ the crews had to be to remain friends!
.
One of the more fascinating areas was the radar training room where it was possible to control a ‘virtual’ vessel using real navigational charts.
.
After visiting their other training facilities for basic boat repair techniques, emergency rescue procedures and engine mechanics we were treated to delicious homemade cakes with tea and coffee.
.
The Managing Director Richard Baggett then had a short chat with us before we left.
.
All in all, an eye-opening experience of a training institution for all ages with a world standard professional expertise right on our doorstep.
.
Below are numerous photographs showing some of the items of interest shown to our group.
