Posted by Admin on 1 March 2011, 12:00 pm

President Elisabeth Hamilton welcomed members to the meeting and  welcomed back members who had been ill.

Jerusalem was sung and it was agreed to have a CD of Jerusalem played at future meetings for us to sing along to as we miss Valerie Woodmore playing the piano.

Birthday cards were distributed.

Names were taken of the members who would like to attend the AGM at the Medina Theatre on 27th April and there are various activities taking place this year as the Isle of Wight Women’s Institute celebrate their 90th Birthday.

Correspondence was read and the financial statement was given.

Several members are going on the Red Nose Day walk at Yarmouth.

Art and Craft continues to be well supported.

Our Birthday Lunch is being held at The New Holmwood Hotel on 14th April.

There may be an outing to the Mayflower Theatre to see We Will Rock You in May.

Lunch and Games is being held on the 10th March.

This is a very popular day and we have friends and visitors from various WIs.

Sarah Lang was our speaker and gave a very interesting talk on Beatrix Potter’s life. Beatrix was a prolific painter and illustrator who started painting at a very young age. She was a very lonely person and spent many hours in her school room at home. She married late in life and bought lots of land with the proceeds from her books.  When she lived in the Lake District she funded a Community Nurse for the area. She died in 1943 and her ashes were scattered on her land, which she left to the National Trust.

The meeting closed just after 4pm.
