THOUSANDS FLOCK TO ‘COWES AT PLAY’ EXHIBITION

Staged at the Regatta Centre in Bath Road, the exhibition, which ended on Sunday 28th October 2007, featured a diverse variety of on-shore leisure activities enjoyed over past decades by people in Cowes, Northwood and Gurnard. Over 500 pictures could be viewed, either on display boards or in albums, and there were numerous cherished artefacts.

Among the visitors was television and West End actress Celia Imrie, who has a home in Cowes; she took special interest in the display depicting Cowes Operatic and Dramatic Society’s 109-year-old history.

Many people showed their appreciation of the event by stating in a visitors’ book such comments as ‘very interesting’ and ‘well done once again Cowes Heritage’.

Although there was already an impressive display of football photographs, including some of Cowes FC, many more were brought in during the event, including some pictures of a once-thriving local football team comprising local traders and businessmen, whose games were played during the Wednesday half-day.

Something of a conundrum was presented during the event when a visitor brought in photographs of one Agnes Brown in various costumes she wore at a succession of Cowes Operatic and Dramatic Society shows. “We think she was a performer during 1910-20, and I would like to hear from anyone who can give more information about her,” said Cowes Heritage chairman John Groves.

Even more welcome would be photographs and artefacts concerning all aspects of transport in the Cowes area – for the next exhibition planned for 2008 by Cowes Heritage, to be called ‘Cowes on the Move’. The event will attempt to cover all aspects of transport, from the airfield that used to exist at Somerton, to the local train and bus operations, and cross-Solent ferries.

A nine-year-old boy from Coventry won the children’s count-the-balloon competition at the ‘Cowes at Play’ exhibition.
