Not a kiss on the lips
for lips are for lovers,
and their love has ended, per se.
Not a kiss on the lips
reserved now for others
prepared second fiddle to play.
Not a kiss on the cheek
as sons give to mothers,
now passion has faded away.
Not a kiss on the cheek
lest emotion uncovers
those feelings they’d wish to allay.
Not a smile in the eyes
where nascent tears hover,
that shed would their plan disarray.
Not a smile in the eyes
lest in them they discover
old longings their pride holds at bay.
Just a hand shaking hand,
as one friend clasps another,
to show there’s no need to inveigh
in terms once said none can recover
that mutual deceit would betray,
revealing they’re both fallen idols
remorseful at too late a day.
