The calendar arrived by post.
“Another set of garish views,”
I thought, “of parts once loved,
now far beyond my present range –
such scenes as emphasise the sad
restrictions age endures.”
But no! Each month displayed the art
of men well-skilled in draughtsmanship,
of Kilburne, Schroeder, Elsley,
whose work revealed the gracious way,
Victorian, Edwardian, in which
their subjects lived.
In scenes where happy children passed
the carefree hours – rode or danced,
or posed before a glass to check
a floral patterned dress, I saw
again my own untroubled youth –
recalled its innocence and joy;
and heartened by those thoughts,
as though re-entering that state
of grace, I felt at peace with all,
ineffably serene.
