No stellar miracle that night,
we learn, shone over Bethlehem;
but, conjunct, only Jupiter
with Saturn signified the Birth –
and that full seven years before
our calendar began.
Thus Science puts its case, upheld
by claims which set King Herod’s end
in Four or Five B.C. – strong claims
that falsify a time-scale which
would have the Holy Trio fleeing from
a tyrant then defunct.
And those elusive Magi? Some
insist St. Matthew took them from
prophetic lore, embellishing his tale.
No supernova guiding kings,
no spices, camel-borne, no gold
or spikenard laid in homage? Yet,
a million years shall not suffice
to make mankind deny that Christ,
one hallowed day, was born to grow
and teach – that all might know the Way.
