The warmth-absorbing brickwork throws
pale shadows in the wintry light,
the house, sedate in sweet repose,
a comfort to the soul and sight.
The long façade has three-score eyes
that watch the dark and sculptile yew;
behind the house the spinneys rise,
in subtle greens and misty blue.
To house Northampton’s noble line,
no place more worthy – none more clear
to show how masonry, like wine,
improves with keeping, year by year.
