CONTRASTS

Youth in a painting,
age on a chair;
age full of wisdom,
youth unaware:
age in a blue gown,
beige lace bedight;
‘Cherry Ripe’ innocent,
youth all in white:
youth with a posy,
basket on arm;
youth’s cheeks are rosy,
age’s have charm:
pale cheeks and wrinkles
match the grey hair,
youth is a brunette –
disparate pair.
Youth from her gilt frame
pauses to look
over old shoulders,
age reads a book.
Nothing in common?
Ah! – a surprise!
Youth and age share
compassionate eyes.
