At ease in basket-chairs, red cushioned, set
on sloping lawns, the titled ladies sit –
display short skirts, cloche hats – exchange
the gossip of the day.
Their men, conventionally de rigueur
in blue and cream, all privilege a norm,
survey the teeming Solent – await their
ensigned launches, eager now to be afloat.
Gazebo perched, home based at Castle Rock,
one Rosa Lewis, erstwhile cook and courtesan,
hotelier par excellence, and trusted with
more secrets than their lordships’ wives,
observes with impish joy the placid scene –
remembers recent snubs – prepares her vulgar
and aggressive prank.
