Winter-stripped, the elm has showered
leaves autumnal, bronze and gold,
Danae’s rain, where rain-empowered
freshets have their flood-song told.
Haunt of stoat, resort of adder,
where the pliant saplings stood;
thistle’s brown and sorrel’s madder,
bulldozed to a barren rood.
