Inspired by love, it stands unique,
designed by a birthday gift to be,
embroidery there at its peak,
consummate in its artistry.
No Phaedra’s thorn-sharp needle pierced
to take those silken strands,
but that of one in art rehearsed,
with filial heart and skilful hands.
No dutiful Victorian lass
or cloistered prim novitiate
such needlework ever did surpass,
such loveliness create.
How far afield must seekers stray
to find exquisite blooms like these?
Beyond the shores of Old Cathay,
to gardens of Hesperides?
(Greek legend. Phaedra, waiting for Hippolytus, pierced myrtle leaves.)
