He has not left a ‘Palace’ job
in dungeon or disgrace;
he never joined a doping mob,
nor rode a crooked race.
He has not jumped from slum to stage –
a gimmick-pushed surprise;
he never wrote a sordid page,
nor mixed with foreign spies.
He never bought an Arab slave,
nor stole one from a sheik;
nor in a secret dark enclave
saw witchcraft twice a week.
In being neither titled rake,
nor sour disloyal flunkey;
nor fallen person, traitor, crook,
nor sadist, pimp, nor “junky”;
and having not in friar’s cell,
endured monastic stint,
how can he even start to hope
to see his work in print?
