FALL FROM THE HIGH-WIRE (Sketch by E. J. Lewis 1863)

Poised high above the trapeze,
tinsel reflecting the light;
born to the circus-ring’s call,
trained to perform at a height
sixty dread feet from the ground;
dedicate aerial sprite.

Nerveless and wholly engrossed,
warily testing the tension;
keyed up to venture on wire,
sensing the crowd’s apprehension;
grasping her balancing-pole,
weighing each pliant extension.

Drum roll! Portentous tattoo.
Silence! Expectancy’s lull;
death with percussive éclat,
youth in her heyday to cull,
drubs with a skeletal wrist;
top-hat askew on his skull.
