They’re often caught, the victim of his ploys,
in offices, in streets, in public parks,
where Dulay waits in ambush with his boys,
to perpetrate his Candid Camera larks –
those prep-school standard, quite unfunny, japes
involving phoney fitments, or a goat;
unauthorised ‘official’ jackanapes;
impersonations with a foreign note.
Observe his smile – it would no doubt appeal
if in some other programme it were shown;
but now acute embarrassment we feel
for those misguided people who condone
the screening of their near-moronic acts –
inanity that passes all belief.
For us a contretemps engendered lacks
validity as humorous relief.
With whimsicality he propagates
confusion in a world enough confused;
by engineered absurdity inflates
our resolution not to be amused.
