The controversy waxes, wanes,
debates the conflagration’s cause –
a natural phenomenon
or act of God to signify
His wrath?
But would God play a vandal’s role –
for one man’s error thus destroy
what pious men so nobly wrought
to glorify His name?
In our abysmal ignorance,
accustomed to equate our thought
with wisdom, infinite, unique,
that only godhead may command,
and gauge divine reaction by
the yardstick of our own – impose
restrictions on omnipotence –
we say it could not be –
from lack of faith deny
that miracles still happen.
