How oft did artists try and fail,
though masters of their trade,
to paint the transformation
in thee. O blessed Mary,
the birth of Jesus made.
But genius would not suffice,
nor colours ground with skill,
and only one quite free from vice
to match in purity thine own
could e’er that task fulfil.
Though beauty from their brushes came,
none could illume thine eyes
to shine O blessed Mary,
with that celestial flame
bestowed by Paradise.
