Ye men of Oxford, harken,
and hearing, loose restraint;
let brows of scholars darken,
portentous at my plaint.
From Magdalen Bridge to Tom Quad,
in Turl, in Broad, and High;
a ‘bacillus and bomb’ squad,
bids Roman standards die.
Shall Isis drown her Latin,
though Greek be lost in Cam?
Where lupine changes fatten,
reforms prepare the lamb.
Who with Responsions tamper,
at learning aim a blow;
dares none the dons to hamper?
Men: have a Little Go!
With tongue of Caesar banished,
and science ruling all;
when poets, too, have vanished,
decline then reaches fall.
