Aphrodites by the dozen –
Limoges evolved, or from the Louvre:
generous in anatomical display:
heralded by clarion conch: rising star-strap-wise
from plethoric brush-strokes and excited waves,
overlook the cafés’ clientele.
Men preoccupied with dominoes or wine,
blind by habitude to mural chefs d’ouevre,
wearying of games and arguments,
sit hawk-vigilant, awaiting new diversions.
Windows frame the loitering bonnets:
girls, the Most Fair’s wanton daughters,
far less frugal of petticoat and ribbon,
trade in lust as a substitute for love:
taint the twilight with lurking couch-becks,
redolent of cheap and heady perfume.
