At Christmas, open Thou our eyes
that we may clearly see
how far in two millennia
we’ve moved, O Lord, from Thee.
We’ve sinned the sins of Sodom,
regard them as the norm:
Gomorrah’s heinous misdeeds
enacted multiform.
We’ve stripped the Tree of Evil
bare of forbidden fruit,
With ev’ry adolescent
now Satan’s young recruit.
And grant that we this Yuletide
may turn our thoughts to Thee;
set winged Seraphims to ride
atop each laden tree.
That ev’ry child seeing them
may pause awhile from play,
to learn how Christ in Bethlehem
to us gave Christmas Day.
