Expressionless, the painted masks
conform to Greek tradition and
conceal beneath their moulded forms,
in thrice-pierced, hollow-eyed,
and gaping mouthed vacuity,
a victor’s pride in triumph won
at Troy, a faithless woman’s guilt,
and matricidal hate.
Expressionless, they face the news –
the triple tragedy off-stage.
Again off-stage, a fleshy mask,
imbrued with jealous blood, contrives
with pseudo bonhomie to hide
remembered grudges and an urge
to wound with ridicule – to kill
a reputation with a snide
remark as lethal as the blade
Queen Clytemnestra swung.
