Throughout the ages learned men
have burnt ‘the midnight oil’,
deciphering the ancient screeds
with unremitting toil.
Attempting always to explain those
things past human ken –
how Christ, unschooled, inside that fane
His friends and foes astound
by reading from the sacred scrolls,
their meaning to expound:
for scholarship in such as He
was not there to be found.
And later, how, illiterate,
disciples as averred, went forth
to bring the world to God,
yet ‘spoke with tongues’ His word.
