The Detail Fitters:
Thoughts of bonus set them smiling
over templates briskly filing;
drill-guns purring,
then deburring,
bend-blocks keep the details piling.
The Machine Shop:
Swarf thrown far by flashing jaws
of chucks revolving without pause;
‘til clutches freed,
reducing speed,
foil centrifugal force’s laws.
The Assembly Fitters:
Channels curved, to coamings clipped
into assembly jigs are slipped;
chromate jointing’s
pale annointings,
presage a contact, rivet-gripped.
The Inspection Department:
Armed with verniers and gauges
keen inspectors test the stages;
fault detecting,
oft rejecting,
thus their war with error wages.
The Aircraft Stores:
Home of rivet, taper pin,
batched with care and stored in bin;
each part bestowed
with aircraft code,
remote from its commercial kin.
The Welders:
Shielded eyes o’er blow-pipes bending,
welding-rod with metal blending;
with searing heat,
each welding feat,
ancient Vulcan’s art transcending.
