It happened, says Herodotus, some years
before Thermopylae, when Phocians,
beleaguered on Parnassus, white with chalk,
that friend might not slay friend, surprised
Thessalians asleep – wrought havoc – left
four thousand dead – a stratagem
the prophet, Tellias, devised,
and executed with a mere six hundred men.
It happened, said the Press, on Friday last,
throughout a freezing Falkland night,
when Guards with Gurkhas and Marines,
black-faced to blend with ambient murk,
by stealth caught napping Argentines
upon Port Stanley’s guardian heights – a ploy
which Pericles might well have planned,
Thucydides thought worthy to record.
