From obeliscal shade the artist views
a downland prospect – notes how curve
meets subtle curve – enjoys the interplay
of sweet parabolic mutations backed
by amplitude of sky –
on paper draws, rejects, and draws again
his own conception, simple, stark, and pure,
reducing landscape to primaeval form,
an aeon cancelled with each contour change –
eschews the picturesque as evidenced
by Nature panoplied with trees, and those
few artefacts that might seduce a less
committed eye –
allows a winding road or furrowed field
alone to break the basic rigour of
his scene.
