Burdened boughs in fear depending,
frozen meres invite the skate;
chimneys’ warmth with chill wind blending
threnodies of winter’s hate.
Crystal-sheathed the gleaming hedges,
guiding lines ‘tween road and lea;
shining thro’ the swirling dredges,
exquisite transparency.
Nebulous lie cheerless valleys,
saturnine the river’s spread;
spellbound by a whisp’ring ballet’s
Danse Macabre of northern dread.
