Burdened boughs, white-weighted, bend,
frozen meres invite the skate;
chimney-stacks with wind gusts blend
threnodies above our grate.
’Midst the blizzard’s swirling throe,
guiding lines ’tween road and lea,
crystal-sheathed the hedgerows show
exquisite transparency.
Nebulous the hills and valleys,
saturnine the river’s spread;
spellbound by the snowflake ballet’s
Danse Macabre of northern dread.
