Do you never hear the call of the sea?
The sea you cannot know;
as you watch a barge or collier free,
that rides Medina’s flow.
Does the haunting cry of gulls on the wing
not tell of Neptune’s realm;
where the ships of countless destinies swing
to the compass-guided helm.
When the sirens fill their puissant bray
with tales that stir the soul,
of the unattainable faraway,
which forms the rover’s goal;
would you have bold Perseus this earth regain,
with his ancient skill to free you from your chain?
