THE KING’S BIRTHDAY

(Amalienborg Castle, Copenhagen.)

Before the castle there, they stand
and play, the Royal Life Guards’ band;
in trousers blue, and tunics red,
a bearskin poised on each man’s head.

The Royal Standard flies on high,
a green-bronze horseman rides nearby:
a grand parade, a proud display,
to celebrate a natal day.
