In spite of what cacophonists may say
and do to thrill and hypnotise the young;
despite the hint that I have ‘had my day’,
my melodies will live, my lyrics sung,
long after each and ev’ry hirsute group
with jungle noise has ceased to ‘entertain’;
when adolescent taste has looped-the-loop,
and worthy tunes find favour once again.
Eternal Hero, still I’ll hold the stage,
romantic, debonair – a star supreme;
and in the best tradition I’ll engage
to lift the heart, yet let the fancy dream.
