She failed to reach the final test,
that gifted Young Musician with
the golden flute – which was
a pity, for to complement
dexterity with which she solved
each problem in the score,
she also pleased the sight,
a Sargent subject in a gown
as green as Chartreuse when
observed through tinted old
Venetian glass – a shade
subdued enough to focus one’s
attention on the flesh tints of
her arms, her classic face,
on fingers quite inspired,
and on her honey-coloured hair.
Composure, too, was there,
its quality mature beyond her years.
And when she spoke, oh, how her speech
confirmed that, musicality apart,
we had that night been introduced
to one of the elect!
